An eight-year stay at the Gardens included 193 appearances and the disappointment of relegation, too. It was one that ended in glory however, as after helping the Saints back into the top flight Smith was on hand to help Bruce Reihana hoist the Amlin Challenge Cup, after his final appearance for the club.
Meanwhile, three Hall of Fame tight heads competed for the other prop place but ultimately there was a runaway winner in Pearce. While the alternate options in Ray Longland and Ron Jacobs both played during 'golden eras' for the club, success for the Saints was relatively scarce during Pearce's 19 years and his ferocious loyalty - along with 411 appearances - is what sets him apart.
International recognition duly came and Pearce won 36 England caps too, all of which came in his time at the Gardens.
Voting for the middle spot of the front row will begin shortly on the Saints' Facebook page, a trio of excellent hookers in the running.
