Lawes’ eyes on Wallabies, not history

Despite the opportunity to hit another significant milestone under Eddie Jones, Courtney Lawes says that simply winning is motivation enough for England this Saturday afternoon.

Victory over the Wallabies at Twickenham would see the class of 2016 match the magic number of 14 consecutive Ws set by Clive Woodward’s men back in 2002/03, though the Saints second row warned against distractions.

“It honestly makes no difference to us,” he told the England Rugby Podcast. “We’re not going for records and we’re not worried about history. We’re worried about who we’re playing at the weekend and that’s the main thing.

“We have to keep our eye on the ball otherwise there’s a danger of slipping up.”

Lawes was also bullish when he looked back over England’s summer whitewash of the Wallabies Down Under, insisting plenty of water has passed under the bridge in the meantime.

“A lot of rugby has been played since then so I don’t think it will have that much of an impact. There will be different teams, different players and most likely different tactics, so it’ll be a tough game.

“There are a lot of good players in that Australian team that we’ve got to be aware of and we’ve certainly taking notes on every one of them.”

England versus Australia kicks off at 2:30pm on Saturday – a game being shown live on Sky Sports.
