Saints flanker Sion Bennett says that he hopes he has been able to pass on some valuable experience to his team mates ahead of the Singha Sevens at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday night.
Bennett, who joined the Saints in May of last year from Scarlets, has played for Wales on the World Rugby Sevens Series and says that there’s more to sevens that just running: “Hopefully I’ll try and give them some wisdom.
“There’s a lot more tactics than just running in sevens and, especially defensively, there is massive amount of talking and lots of little details that you need to get right, so hopefully I’ll pass on some wisdom.”
With international experience under his belt, Bennett is one of the most experienced sevens players at Saints disposal, and Bennett believes that sevens doesn’t always get the credit that it deserves.
“I think it really is (underrated), especially when you go up to the international level which I’ve done a little bit with. It’s so hard because obviously everyone you’re playing against is super fast with an awesome step. You’ve got to get it right otherwise one mistake and it’s a try."
Whilst one mistake, as Bennett says, can prove costly, he also belives that sevens should be fun and that players shouldn’t be frightened of throwing the ball around to create exciting attacking opportunities.
"Sevens is a fun thing; you want to go out there and you don’t want to be scared to play. An error is a very big thing and it can be costly but at the same time you want to concentrate on the attack and really go out there and enjoy yourself!”
