Harry Mallinder scored 12 points from the tee and set up a crucial try as England came from behind to beat Australia at the Under-20 World Championship at the AJ Bell Stadium on Wednesday night.

Australia got off to the perfect start, scoring a converted try in the opening minute through Jack Maddocks.

Two penalties from Mallinder and two from Australia’s Mack Mason had England trailing 13-6 at the break.

The match sparked into life in the second half, however, when Joe Marchant ran onto the end of Mallinder’s chip through to close the gap to just two points and begin their second half come back.

Two penalties from Mallinder in the final 15 minutes gave England a four point victory to take through to the semi finals where they will face South Africa on Monday.

Speaking after the match, Mallinder said: “It's a great feeling, we wanted three wins.

“We are delighted to get the win, it wasn’t pretty at times, but we stuck at it and got the win. We will enjoy tonight because we are through to the semi-finals and that is an achievement in itself."
