Left disappointed after yesterday’s last minute loss to Newcastle Falcons at home after an intercept try from Vereniki Goneva won the away side the game, Saints’ fly-half Stephen Myler said that the side must dust itself down quickly and focus on heading to Welford Road nest weekend.
“It’s a pretty deflating feeling at the moment for the lads,” Myler told SaintsTV after the game last night.
“It wasn’t an ideal situation with losing Kieran so early but we feel like we did enough to win that game and we’ve let it slip, unfortunately that interception at the end has cost us. The one that got away perhaps.
“It’s unfortunate that it takes losing a man to give us a kick up the backside and give us a bit of fire in the belly. We need to be doing that from minute one with 15 on the field.
“Unfortunately, that happened to Kieran but we showed a bit of heart, came back into it and probably should have won the game and that’s why we’re feeling so disappointed.
“I just don’t think we were accurate enough with what we did and it just coincided with losing Kieran that we started to improve what we were doing.
“Consequently, at the start of the second half we launched our set pieces a little bit better, we had more territory and kicking game improved and that told on the scoreboard. Ideally we’d like to do that from the minute one but we didn’t quite do that.
“It’s disappointing because we feel like we did enough to win that game; we came back into it, got ahead on the scoreboard a couple of times and it’s probably one we should have seen out. It’s unfortunate that at the end that didn’t happen.
Spending most of the game on the back foot and behind on the scoreboard, Myler said that for Saints to comeback and get themselves in a position to win the game was important but that the side should have never been in an inferior position in the first place and they must work hard this week to head to Welford Road in a better place.
“From the position we were in there are positives to be taken but we need to address the things that put us in that position in the first place.
“We can’t afford to be playing teams with 14 men, it’s not ideal. But then again it showed what we’re capable of if that happens.
“So we need to dust ourselves down, we know we’ve got a massive challenge ahead next week and we’ve got to work hard to be ready for that and put in a better performance.
