Saints’ youngsters took to the back pitches at Franklin’s Gardens this afternoon to face the old foe of Leinster Schools, scoring three tries to their guests’ one to take the title in a long standing rivalry.
Competing for the Aer Lingus Cup, Saints’ Under-18s took to Pitch 1 for their first preseason game of the year to face Leinster Schools.
With Saints getting off to a slow start, Leinster got on the scoreboard first. Lining up for a huge 60 metre kick just 10 minutes in, Leinster’s fly-half sunk that, with a little help from the ever heightening breeze, to see his side ahead early doors.
With a try coming for the Leinstermen just after, Saints were 10-points behind and needing to respond. Fin Creighton stepped up and sped down the left wing, crossing the whitewash but sending the conversion of his own try into the post.
Leinster stretched their lead to over a score with the last play of the game, however, sending another penalty through the uprights.
Just minutes after the restart Saints closed the gap with a brilliant score out wide for Adam Williamson. Creighton’s conversion shot just wide in the wind, however.
It was all Saints in the second forty, the hosts holding their guests without another score but adding another of their own with another clever score in the corner; this time Sam Tutt crossed for Saints.
There was some toing and froing in the games dying minutes but Saints held out until the final whistle, taking the three-point win and the Aer Lingus Cup.
