Groom says maintaining Saints' impressive home record is a boost

Returning home to Franklin’s Gardens after two tough weekends on the road, Saints got themselves back to winning ways with a hard-fought victory over a testing Worcester Warriors side.

Nic Groom said that despite not making it easy for themselves, Saints were happy to get a win on the board.

“It ended it being quite a tough old game,” Groom told SaintsTV after yesterday’s win.

“We made it a lot harder for ourselves that we needed to at certain points in the game, especially after half time. We struggled with the momentum but overall we’re happy to get back to winning ways.

“We knew that Worcester have a very strong kicking game. They strangle you with their territory and in the second half we just made too many mistakes, gave away too many penalties.

“That winds the clock down and gets the wind in their sails and we just struggled to build phases from that. Luckily after that maul try near the end we got out of that slump but it was a bit too late.”

Now having won their last five home matches, Saints have made progress towards making the Gardens a fortress. Groom said that while the home record means a lot, their attention is turned to improving their away form, starting with next Friday’s trip to Sale Sharks.

“It’s amazing to have that record,” he commented.

“We all love playing here, it’s an amazing ground to paly at and our home form is something we can be proud of. But if we want to be realistic about finishing in that top six then we need to get a win on the road, starting with next Friday.

“We aren’t looking at the table right now. It’s game after game that we need to focus on now, we need to look inwards and get our own stuff right and if we do that then the table position will take care of itself.

Earlier in the season, Saints racked up a 24-5 win over Sale on home turf but Groom says that they will be expecting a very different game on Friday night.

“Sale a very different beast at home. They have a dangerous attack at home, they like to give the ball some air and they’ve got some good players out wide.

“For us it’s about looking at this game, fixing whatever we need to fix and putting in a huge performance on Friday.”
