Double-hundred Day for Christian

Travis PerkinsSponsored by Travis Perkins

Christian Day will become a Northampton Saints double centurion at Welford Road tomorrow afternoon, and director of rugby Jim Mallinder has paid tribute to the second row’s quality and durability in his eight-and-a-half years at Franklin’s Gardens.

Day arrived in the East Midlands in the summer of 2008 and has played a full role in the Saints’ successes in the subsequent seasons. He arrived as an Aviva Premiership winner, having played in Sale’s title-winning team of 2006, and has added to his collection of winners’ medals in the Anglo-Welsh Cup (2010), the European Rugby Challenge Cup (2009 and 2014), as well as a second personal Aviva Premiership crown in 2014.

The Players’ Player of the Season in 2013/14, Day now combines his playing commitments with his role as the chairman of the Rugby Players’ Association, and Mallinder said that his consistency of performance reflects the England Saxon’s commitment to the club.

“Christian was a key target for us in our early years at the club and he has justified our decision to bring him to Franklin’s Gardens time and again,” he said. “He has been outstanding for us throughout his time here, running one of the best lineouts in the league and really contributing in all areas behind the scenes.

“He has been one of the most consistent performers in the Aviva Premiership in his eight-and-a-half seasons at the Saints and thoroughly deserves all the praise that we believe should come his way to mark his two hundredth appearance, which is a notable milestone.”
