Lawes ready for challenge of London Irish

After two impressive home victories on Franklin's turf, Saints attention is now firmly on their first away game since their opening loss to Saracens as they prepare to head to London Irish this Sunday.

Skipper for the night on Friday, Courtney Lawes said that thought the recent wins, including Friday's bonus point victory over the previously unbeaten Bath, have boosted confidence, Saints are going to continue to let their season opener drive them.

"It obviously still hurts and we can't forget about it," Lawes commented about the Twickenham defeat.

"Especially with this coming away game, we'll continue to use it as motivation for the rest of the season.

"I think the Sarries game was just a bit of a weird game. The boys had a really, really good preseason and we wanted to come out and have a really good start but unfortunately it didn't go the way we wanted it to.

"Sarries were on fire on the day and we found it tough to cope with that. Especially being such a young team, such a fresh team. It takes time to build you belief and your character and having that start just proved to be wrong place, wrong time for us.

"But I think we've shown in the last couple of weeks what we really intended and what we have in us."

Leading the side for the first time ever on Friday night, Lawes said that to captain his hometown club was a great honour.

"It was good. Obviously, it was a bit of pressured situation with Bath being on such good form and with being at home and wanting to continue our success from the previous week. But I really enjoyed it.

"I've got to thank the lads for putting in the work they did; it was a really good result for us."

Looking ahead, then, to the challenge of London Irish this weekend, Lawes said that while other sides may target the newly promoted London Irish as something of an easy target, Saints are preparing for the game as any other.

"Every game's tough nowadays in the league. London Irish are a big pack, they've got some really good players in the team and if we're not on good form then they'll turn us over, no doubt."
