Northampton Saints Community team are launching applications for a brand-new Referee Development Programme for the 2026/27 season.
Following the incredibly successful Coach Development Programme launched by the Community team at the start of 2025, the team are leaning into the successful format to launch the Referee Development Programme in partnership with the East Midlands Referee Society.
The programme will aim to engage young and aspiring referees aged 16 to 21 and support them in building skills and confidence, with a route into supporting the community game as qualified referees within the East Midlands Referee Society.
On the programme, Ben Lawrence, Head of Community, said, “Unfortunately, the number of young people taking up the whistle to referee school and club games has reduced over the last few years.
“The launch of the Referee Development Programme will be a huge vehicle to give more people the support and opportunities needed to get that number back up to where it needs to be to support our grassroots game.
“We are committed to developing the game at every level, and this programme is an important step towards securing its long-term future. Working with our colleagues at East Midlands Rugby Union, we are proud to lead the way as a PREM club offering dedicated referee development opportunities.
