Campese thanks supporters for neutralising his nerves

Campese Ma’afu admitted to feeling nervous ahead of his full Saints debut yesterday afternoon, but said that any apprehension was soon forgotten when he heard the reception of the club’s supporters.

The Australian-born Fijian international was a second half replacement in the bonus point win over Harlequins, making an immediate impact by winning a penalty in his first scrum. The former Nottingham prop arrived at the club in February and after getting a run-out for the Wanderers against Sale he got to experience a capacity Franklin’s Gardens for the first time, something that will live long in his memory.

“It’s great to get the debut out of the way,” Ma’afu told SaintsTV. “There were a lot of nerves building up to today’s game but it was a great outcome.

“My nerves went with the massive applause I got from the fans when I ran out. It was a great feeling and a great atmosphere here.

“The Aviva Premiership is always going to be tough, making the transition from Pro D2. But I knew what to expect. The Saints have built a winning culture here and it’s a matter of me having to come in and adapt straight away.

“We’ve got a tough run home and it’s a massive task for us, but if we stick to our systems I believe we’ll be fine.”
