Northampton Saints can confirm that the proposed Saints Memorial Wall project at Franklin’s Gardens will not proceed.
Launched earlier this year in partnership with Sporting Legacies, the concept would have enabled supporters to have their own cremated remains, or those of a loved one, respectfully interred within a dedicated memorial space at the Club’s home.
At the time of launch, the Club recognised that the Saints Memorial Wall was a new and innovative concept within professional sport. While the project generated interest and positive feedback from many supporters, demand during the initial launch period was not sufficient to support the long-term viability of the development.
As a result, and following careful consideration, the Club has concluded that it is not feasible to proceed and has taken the decision to discontinue the project.
Supporters who have already purchased a niche will receive a full refund, and Sporting Legacies will contact them directly to discuss the next steps.
The Club will continue to explore alternative ways for supporters and their families to create a lasting legacy at Franklin’s Gardens, while remaining mindful of the deep personal connection many people have with the home of Northampton Saints.
“When we launched the Saints Memorial Wall, we did so believing it could provide a meaningful and lasting tribute for supporters and their loved ones at the heart of Franklin’s Gardens,” said the Club’s Chief Executive, Julia Chapman. “We knew it was an ambitious and innovative concept, and one that represented something entirely new within rugby.
“Having carefully reviewed the level of demand we concluded that it was not right for us to proceed with the project. This was not a decision we took lightly and we recognise that it will be disappointing for some supporters. While that is a source of genuine regret, we hope they will understand the reasons behind our decision.
“We are extremely grateful to everyone who expressed an interest in the Memorial Wall and especially those who committed to purchasing a niche. We will, of course, ensure that all funds paid are returned in full, and that any supporters who purchased a niche, or expressed an interest in doing so, will be contacted individually.
“The connection that so many people have with Franklin’s Gardens spans generations, and one of the most encouraging aspects of this project was seeing how strongly supporters feel about preserving that connection for future generations. While this particular initiative will not proceed, we remain committed to finding an appropriate way for supporters and their families to leave a lasting mark at the home of Northampton Saints in future.
