ACADEMY REPORT Saints edged out on bonus derby day

The hosts' extra point came courtesy of tries from Howard Packman, Harry Morley, Rotimi Segun and Steve Arroyo-Hover, but with Tigers scoring six of their own - including a hat-trick for Harry Thacker - Oliver Povoas' late score finally killed off the contest.

The weather conditions have been unpredictable so far in the A-League but it was back to the sunshine of ONs as the youngsters attempted to tackle a Tigers side with a 100 percent bonus-winning record in the Academies League.

It was form that quickly showed, Will Owen tapping a quick penalty and forcing his way through over the Saints try line.

If anything the try seemed to wake the Saints up and when a Leicester knock on landed in Packman's path, the winger showed superb footballing skills and pace to outstrip a raft of Tigers defenders and win the race to touchdown.

Adrenaline perhaps still flowing, Packman would see yellow just four minutes after the score for a late tackle though and a man light a second try was conceded to a driving Tigers maul.

Still a man light, however, Saints again found the ideal response with Harry Morley going over and Packman then returned to combine with Josh Skelcey to set up Segun, the 16-year-old surging under the posts.

Sam Olver's second conversion opened up a 19-10 advantage but the visitors again brought the game within a score with their third on the stroke of half-time and the lead was theirs shortly after too with Povoas providing the bonus score.

The momentum remained theirs, but while they would make it five before the hour, the conversion went astray for a fourth time and the Saints brought the game back to life with their own bonus score through Steve Arroyo-Hover.

The extras were again added by Olver to bring the game within a single point but while Saints had their chances it was Leicester piling on the pressure as the clock ticked down.

A scrum five metres from their own line gave the hosts one last chance to launch a counter from deep but when Tigers turned on the power for a turnover, Povoas was in for his brace and the game was up.
