While the turn of the year coincided with a significant improvement from the Saints going forward, attack coach Alan Dickens says that there has to be balance in their overall game.
Saints previously boasted the best defence in the Aviva Premiership in terms of tries conceded, but with a flip in fortunes regarding the two areas of the game, the perfect recipe is something they have been searching for on the training field.
“Earlier for the season attack was a focus for us,” he told SaintsTV. “Now we’re averaging three and a half tries a game, but it’s about finding the balance.
“We’ve been working hard this week on our defence, but equally we can’t afford to take our eye off attack, either.”
Top six and Champions Cup rugby is now the immediate goal for the Saints and the arrival of a rejuvenated Worcester side to Franklin’s Gardens provides extra focus for a must win game.
“I’ve been impressed with the way they’ve played since Gary Gold came in,” Dickens added. “They beat Saracens at their own game a couple of weeks ago; a good kick return, putting them under pressure and kicking the penalties when they came.
“Last week, while they ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline against Exeter, they scored the four good tries and showed a different side to their game so they’ll be confident coming here.
“From our perspective, the second half at Bath was good, a lot like the first half at Newcastle. The target now is to pull it all together - attack, defence and set-piece and we’ll be ready for a good performance.”
