Budge Pountney

Anthony Charles ‘Budge’ Pountney was one of the driving forces behind Northampton Saints’ transformation from a relegated side into European champions.

Born in Southampton and raised in a farming family, Pountney developed through Winchester RFC and Bedford College before joining Saints as a teenager. He made his first-team debut during the 1994/95 season and soon established himself as a relentless and influential back-row forward.

Although relegation followed in 1995/96, Pountney became a central figure in the team that immediately bounced back under Sir Ian McGeechan. The famous ‘Demolition Tour’ of Division Two laid the foundations for the most successful period in the Club’s modern history.

His finest playing achievement came in 2000 when Saints defeated Munster 9-8 to win the Heineken Cup. Pountney was a key member of a pack that formed the backbone of one of the greatest teams the Club has produced.

At international level, he qualified for and represented Scotland between 1998 and 2002, winning 31 caps and captaining his country. He was part of Scotland’s Five Nations Championship-winning side in 1999 and represented them at the Rugby World Cup later the same year.

Pountney captained Saints between 2001 and 2004 before retiring through injury. His leadership qualities immediately led to a coaching role, and alongside Paul Grayson he helped steer Northampton away from relegation before becoming Director of Rugby in 2005.

His post-playing career has included roles as an RFU citing officer, Director of Rugby at Bournemouth, senior school rugby positions and, since 2021, Director of Development at Ulster Rugby. His Hall of Fame induction in 2018 recognised both his leadership and his contribution to one of the most successful periods in Saints history.

Hall of Fame profiles have been researched and compiled, with the Club’s grateful thanks, by the volunteers of Northampton Saints Foundation’s Heritage Department – whose work helps preserve and share the rich history of Northampton Saints.
