Saints Academy visit Malvern for Warriors matches

The Saints Academy were in action earlier today with the under-15s and under-16s taking on Worcester Warriors at Malvern College.

The under-15s were first to take to the field but the match ended in a heavy defeat for the young Saints.

This match was followed by their under-16 counterparts playing against the Warriors and an early try gave the Saints a 7-0 lead. Worcester then got into their stride to rack up a 26-7 lead before a late try from the Saints made the final score 26-12 to the Warriors.

Speaking at the matches, Academy coach Jon Curry said: “These were the second of our pre-season matches.

“We had a pre-season camp with them at Stowe School a couple of weeks ago and this was just our second chance to watch them in a live match.

"They are at the stage where they all want to be professional rugby players and they’re massively proud to pull the Saints shirt on for the first time. They just love being here.”

Ross Stewart, the EPDG manager at the Saints, added: “In the last two games we’ve had 46 boys playing rugby.

“It’s a real eye-opener for the lads and an opportunity to get them in an environment where they understand the quality of players that are out there at other academies.

“We’ve got a festival on Tuesday and I think we’ll arrive at that festival and hopefully be able to perform a little bit better than we have the last two games.”
