Davey ‘honoured’ to follow Trevarthen into Lightning 100-club

Megan Davey said she was ‘honoured’ to follow in the footsteps of Katie Trevarthen and become Loughborough Lightning’s second-ever 100 appearance maker

The scrum-half ran out alone at the StoneX Stadium on Saturday as she clocked up a century of outings in an African Violet shirt, at the age of just 24.

She did so in a specially embroidered shirt that was presented to her by Lightning’s first centurion, Katie Trevarthen (#013) , who retired at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

“It feels amazing, I never actually thought I would get to 100 so to get here in this lovely stadium, I know we didn’t get the win, but it was amazing,” said Davey (#035) after the 32-21 defeat.

“Me and Katie are really good friends, we work pretty closely together still. To get the shirt presented by her, it felt amazing because she has done it and beyond. To follow behind her so closely it is just an honour.”

Meg Davey

Davey was just 17 years old when she made her Lightning debut back in 2017 in the club’s inaugural season in Premiership Women’s Rugby (then called Tyrrells Women’s Premier 15s).

“I remember just going out there and not having a care in the world,” she recalled. “Now it feels a lot different. The game has progressed so much. It is crazy to think I’ve hit 100. I think I probably should’ve hit it before but I picked up some injuries. But to get there feels great.”

Davey played 65 minutes of the PWR Round 8 encounter and left the field with Lightning just three points adrift, but a strong Saracens finish saw the hosts claim a bonus-point success and deny Loughborough any match points from their visit to North London.

“I think we need to take more positives than we thought,” added Davey. “We were in it the whole 80 minutes, it is just that conversion rate. There is a lot to take away from this. I am upset but I am also happy because we could’ve won it, it wasn’t like we were so far off.

“We’ve got Gloucester-Hartpury next up and we’ve got to take some confidence from our performance here into that game and hopefully we will get the right result.”

If Davey appears in that match at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens, she will pull level with Trevarthen on 101 on the all-time Lightning appearances list.
