Player Numbers
Every player who has worn the Black, Green and Gold in a competitive 1st XV match for Northampton Saints is awarded a unique Saints number, recognising their place in the Club’s proud history.
VIEW HISTORICAL PLAYER NUMBERS LIST HERE
Starting from the earliest surviving records in 1895 (following the loss of earlier archives in a pub fire) each player is listed chronologically based on the date of their senior debut. For players who debuted before digital records began in 1998, numbers are assigned alphabetically within their debut year.
The list begins with ET Abell, the first recorded Saint, and includes legends such as:
- Edgar Mobbs (#281) – one of the Club’s most iconic figures
- Teddy Cook (#350) – Saints’ all-time leading try scorer
- Ron Jacobs (#1121) – Saints’ record appearance holder
- Paul Grayson (#1658) – Saints’ all-time leading points scorer
Please note: Only players who have made 1st XV appearances are included. Matches for the 2nd XV, Wanderers, or friendly fixtures are not eligible for numbering.
Rediscovering Saints History
In 2024, thanks to the tireless research of long-time Season Ticket Holder, Tim Jones, the Club was able to honour 235 previously unlisted players who featured before 1895. These names, lost for decades due to the fire, were awarded Roman numerals to preserve the integrity of the original numbering system.
An additional 34 player records were also updated, ensuring the list reflects the most complete and accurate history of Northampton Saints players to date.
