Match Report: Saints 28-12 Cardiff Rugby

Northampton Saints opened their 2026/27 Investec Champions Cup account with a hard-fought 28-12 victory over a travelling Cardiff Rugby side.

Under difficult weather conditions at DPD Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens, Northampton controlled the majority of possession in the opening half and entered the break with just a two-try lead courtesy of efforts from James Pater and Toby Thame.

Cardiff fired back right at the opening of the second period through Harri Millard and added a second shortly after through Mason Grady out wide; however, Investec Player of the Match George Hendy crossed the whitewash to extend Saints lead and a final try from Fraser Dingwall at the death sealed the victory for Saints.

FIRST HALF:

The heavens opened right on kick-off, rendering the opening exchanges the match a scrappy affair. With both sides battling the elements, the kicking game became crucial to controlling momentum.

Eventually, the deadlock on the scoreboard was broken as the men in Black, Green and Gold crossed the whitewash. Off a kick return, Hendy sent the dummy, made a scything break, and gave the ball inside to Alex Mitchell, who found his fullback, Pater, and finished for his sixth try of the 26/27 season.

Saints doubled their lead before the 20-minute mark through Thame. A kick in behind from Ollie Sleightholme was taken back over the whitewash by Mason Grady, giving Saints an excellent attacking platform, and when the free-kick was awarded, Mitchell went quickly, allowing Thame to crash over.

Cardiff had their first dangerous attacking opportunity of the match with a lineout five metres out, but a Tom Lockett steal at the lineout quickly turned defence into attack for the men in Black, Green and Gold.

The ball came loose, and Danilo Fischetti, perhaps unconventionally, hacked the ball downfield and chased his own kick with some unbelievable pace from the Italian international loosehead to win a penalty back inside the Cardiff 22. A tap from the penalty got Saints close, but the captain for the day, Callum Chick, was deemed to have knocked the ball on in the action of scoring just millimetres short of the line.

The Welsh visitors thought they had their first score of the contest from close range through Tom Manz after a Grady break through the defensive line off a midfield scrum. But just as Chick had been denied at the other end of the field, Manz was deemed to have lost control of the ball and the score was chalked off, leaving Saints with a two-try cushion heading into the break.

SECOND HALF:

The visitors came back out for the second period and finally got their try. After building sustained pressure inside of the Saints’ 22, they took a quick tap from a penalty and went one phase before Millard hit a hard line to crash over to bring the deficit to just seven.

With the scoreboard as tight as it was, both sides were fighting tooth and nail for every scrap of possession and territory, and eventually the Saints infringed, with Anthony Belleau sent to the bin metres from their own try line, and Cardiff immediately capitalised through Grady out wide. The conversion was missed, as Saints’ lead was cut to just two points.

The home response was immediate with Cardiff conceding a penalty from the restart, and Saints launched from the lineout, culminating in Hendy slicing his way through a gap and juggling the ball through until eventually dotting it down.

Cardiff almost had another, with Josh Adams making a break, as he looked to be racing away. However, Hendy was the man of the moment once again, chasing down the Welsh international and tackled him into touch to deny a certain score.

Saints had their fourth and final try right on the death as Dingwall collected scrappy ball and carved his way through from 22 metres out. It wasn’t enough to secure a tryscoring bonus point, however, as Saints fell just short of three-try winning margin required to claim an extra winning point in the Champions Cup this season.
