CAMB UNI 8 WANDERERS 34 Diggin pleased with Wanderers bounce back

Travis PerkinsSponsored by Travis Perkins

"It was great to have the game tonight," Diggin said after playing a full 80 minutes in the centres. "Sometimes you have to wait a couple of weeks to try and put it right, but we were hungry for it in training and I think we did some good things tonight. They were a tough team to break down. We had a couple of chances in the first half when we were in their 22 and came away with nothing but we fixed that up and were a lot more clinical in the second half.

"Cambridge put together a good stint at the end as well and I think we were dogged in defence, because we could have rolled over and let them have it but we scrambled well. The 'A' team is now very competitive and it gives all of the guys who aren't playing at the weekend a chacne of some game time as well as some of the younger lads."

The Wanderers are back in action in a fortnight at Franklin's Gardens, when Gloucester United come to town for an Aviva 'A' League showdown - a home semi-final at steak for both sides.

9mins

An attacking Wanderers maul splinters and somehow, the hosts are running clear with the ball, Murdoch fed on the left and the wing with easily enough pace to run it home.

Just as it looks like the Wanderers are going to drive the Blues off their own breakdown, the hosts recover and even earn a penalty out of it. Stevens hits the post from 40m though

23mins

Another brutal scrum from the Wanderers and Cambridge this time find themselves a man down with Sanders shown yellow. Wanderers attack from the line out and on a good line, Waldouck also frees his arms to release Artemyev through the tracking Diggin.

32mins

Verbakel takes in a Wanderers line out and after a huge maul rolls 15m towards the line, Harry drops with the ball for a second try. Olver converts.

HT

Not the most fluent first half for the Wanderers but they lead nonetheless. Tries from Artemyev and Harry have them in front, while with the set-piece functioning well, they certainly have the platform to add to their advantage after the break.

41mins

Wanderers gather in the restart but at the second breakdown, Camb earn a penalty and Stevens nudges it over from straight in front.

47mins

Cambridge under pressure at their own 5m line out and having knocked on, the scrum has only one outcome. The Blues are driven over their own line and Nutley touches down.

49mins

A good counter from a Cambridge clearance puts the Wanderers into the 22 and a penalty straight in front is clipped over by Olver.

54mins

Brilliant counter running from Packman who covers some 50m slaloming between defenders. Patient play draws the penalty and a second yellow for Cambridge. Lineout is mauled within touching distance and Onojaife breaks from the side to go over. Olver converts.

67mins

Turnover ball for the Wanderers and with Collins going close, it is recycled for Herriott to go under the posts unopposed. Hooley converts.

FT

A good work out for the Wanderers, who were made to grind for their tries against a Cambridge side that proved tough to break down. Set-piece dominance told in the end though and three second half tries for forwards Nutley, Onojaife and Herriott have given the scoreline a comfortable look.
