Will Allman’s try and three penalties from Harry Mallinder opened up a handy 16-3 lead at the break and with the skipper adding one of three tries after the break and also taking his personal haul to 22 points, it was left to Rotimi Segun to seal the fifth point late on.
A slow start to the game saw the visitors edge ahead courtesy of two Mallinder penalties and it was from the restart of the second that the game finally came to life.
Having pinched the ball back from a ruck, Michael Morris box kicked and with a kind bounce and some good control on a follow up kick, Allman beat the cover to score.
A yellow card on the stroke of half-time left Newcastle a man down and further behind, Mallinder kicking the resulting penalty and the centre would pierce a gap in Newcastle’s depleted line to add try number two.
That was the first of two tries in a dominant opening to the second 35, James Fish also punishing the 14-man Falcons, but a bonus try appeared increasingly elusive as the clock ran down.
But having seen a pair of great opportunities slip by, Segun was on hand to turn four points into five, collecting Morris’ brilliant cross kick and finishing the game in style.
