Hartley scores as England start summer with a win

The Saints skipper was one of six players from the club to start the match for England, with Lee Dickson, Ben Foden, Chris Ashton, Paul Doran Jones and Phil Dowson also lining up against an experienced Barbarians outfit.

Ashton may have grabbed the headlines with his three tries, but Dowson led the team with aplomb before being carried off after taking a bang to the head.

England head coach Stuart Lancaster played down the knock, saying that the back rower should be fit to make the five-match tour of South Africa this June.

"Phil Dowson had a bang to the head but he is up and walking around in the changing room," he said. "We have some time before the first Test but at the moment he is looking okay."

Ashton certainly had his soon-to-be former clubmates to thank for two of his tries, Dickson setting up the first with a reverse pass and Hartley combining with Owen Farrell to create the second.

England head to South Africa next week for a three-test series against the Springboks and matches against SA Barbarians North and SA Barbarians South.
