Lightning name side for Gardens clash against Harlequins

Director of Rugby Rhys Edwards has named his Loughborough Lightning side to take on Harlequins at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday afternoon (kick-off: 2pm).

Loughborough won on their debut at the stadium back in February, when they edged out Exeter Chiefs 28-25 in a nail-biting rollercoaster of a clash as part of a double header of fixtures alongside Northampton Saints.

But Lightning run out at the Gardens for a standalone women’s fixture for the very first time this weekend, rounding off their Allianz Premier 15s campaign against the defending champions in Northampton.

England centurion and former World Player of the Year Emily Scarratt will lead out Lightning at the Gardens and starts at centre, with Red Roses teammate Helena Rowland selected at fly-half.

Megan Davey wears the No.9 jersey while Scarratt is joined in the Loughborough midfield by Scotland’s Helen Nelson, and Georgie Lingham, Bo Westcombe-Evans and USA fullback Bulou Mataitoga complete the back three.

Up front, England hooker Lark Davies packs down with Katie Trevarthen and Charli Jacoby either side of her.

Abby Duguid and Lilli Ives Campion line-up in the engine room for Lightning, and an explosive back row of Courtney Holtkamp, Sadia Kabeya – who scored two match-winning tries for Lightning on her last visit to the Gardens – and Sara Svoboda round off the starting XV.

“This will be the second time we’ve played at the Gardens,” said Saints’ Women’s Rugby Ambassador and England No.8 Sarah Hunter, who will be in her coaching capacity with Loughborough this weekend while she recovers from injury.

“We had a great game against Exeter and it was a really tight game that we eventually won, and we hope people will come down and support us again.

“The fanbase that we’re growing at Loughborough Lightning is amazing and I know there will be a lot of Northampton supporters there also. We’re looking forward to a lot of people supporting us in our last domestic game of the season.”
