May: Positive support makes all the difference

In the end the 27-18 margin of victory over Worcester was comfortable. But for 74 minutes of its life the contest against the Warriors never stretched beyond a five-point differential between the teams, and the centre says that the noise coming from the Saints Nation lifted the men on the field time and again.

"It was good to have those supporters who made the journey really get behind us today," he said. "We've taken a bit of stick, so it's good to come and put a performance together for the fans who made the long trip.

"We were grateful for that support and tried to show that at the end by going and saying 'thank you' to them. We're looking forward to getting back to Franklin's Gardens and hopefully getting that type of support again next week.

"There's no more pressure than the pressure we put on ourselves. We know we've had a duff couple of weeks and that's been frustrating. You get written off in the press and certain other places and that helps to drive us on. We want to get it right to prove them wrong but the biggest motivation of all is to do it for the people within this group. That's what is keeping us going week to week.

"Crowd support is a pretty under-rated thing. In sports like football, and at clubs where there can be a lot of expectation, you can hear a few boos creep in. That has an effect on people and on players and perhaps has an effect on decision making. You could say that it shouldn't, but inevitably it does at some point.

"To have the positive support today was awesome. When we were on that side of the field we could hear them pushing us on, trying to help us to the best that we can, and it makes a massive difference.

"We're really lucky at home to have a stadium that's full most of the time, and for it to be focussed and behind us is a hell of a weapon as well as your on-field stuff.

"I know it can be difficult, but if they can support us for 80 minutes with a beer and a pie in their hand then it can really make a difference and it's appreciated."
