The Saints Under-18s opened their Premiership Rugby Academies League campaign in the best possible style this past weekend, earning full points from their trip to Newcastle.

The side that started at Kingston Park showed eight changes from that which had headed to Worcester the previous weekend, but it was one of the survivors, fly half James Grayson, who got the scoring underway with an eighth-minute penalty.

Saints used that as a springboard to dominate the rest of the first half, the impressive Alex Mitchell finishing off some strong work from the forwards to score two minutes later, and number eight Sam Easton rounding off a multi-phase attack.

Grayson added five more points, and while Newcastle did score two tries of their own it was the travellers who were well in control come half-time.

The Falcons were next on the score board two minutes after the resumption of play with a penalty, but thereafter the scoring belonged to the Saints.

Gregor Haldane nullified the Newcastle three-pointer, before Easton completed a hat-trick of tries, his second and third both coming from close range. Haldane added both conversions and a penalty eight minutes from time, before centre Freddie McKibbin rounded things off in style with the fifth and final try.

The Saints Under-18s are next in action on Friday, December 11th, when they head to Saracens for a friendly, with the Premiership Rugby Academies League resuming with an East Midlands derby away to Leicester on Saturday, December 19th.
