Northampton College enjoying HITZ experience

This is the College’s first season as HITZ Northampton’s education provider, and their involvement and expertise is reflected in increased numbers on the programme. Not only are other agencies and organisations are referring more young people to HITZ but friends of existing students are also signing up.

“We’ve seen a massive improvement in the quality of education provision this year,” said HITZ project officer Matt Goode. “Chris Dawson and the rest of the staff have been really proactive in how they have approached HITZ, both in what they are doing in the classroom environment and by helping us in other areas, too. This includes allowing us to use the College’s 3G pitch and providing opportunities for current HITZ students to enrol onto other college courses once they have finished with us.

“Before we signed the partnership I was hopeful that this would happen, but now I’m genuinely excited about the future of HITZ Northampton.”

Chris Dawson, curriculum manager, Foundation Studies at Northampton College, said that he has been impressed by how the various elements of the HITZ programme have encouraged students into engaging with learning.

“We are only a few months into the HITZ programme but we are already finding that the students are now enjoying their learning experience,” he said. “Where they were previously disengaged with education, the sport and rugby elements of the programme have captured their interest making them much more motivated to learn maths, English and employability skills as a result, and strengthening their chances to progress onto full-time learning or employment.

“As a College committed to helping young people reach their potential, it is particularly inspiring to work with such an influential local organisation like the Saints on such an exciting project and we are delighted to be involved with HITZ programme.”

HITZ Northampton is a progressive, high profile programme delivered by Northampton Saints, Barclays, Land Rover, Comic Relief and the Wooden Spoon Children's Charity.

The HITZ programme targets young people at risk of exclusion and anti-social behaviour, introducing them – often for the first time – to touch and contact rugby. HITZ Northampton provides participants with the opportunity to access personal and social development programmes, educational support, vocational training programmes and workforce development Apprenticeships and volunteering opportunities.
