OXFORD UNI 10 WANDERERS 74 Young Wandies impress Dickens

“It was a good game,” he told Saints TV. “We know they weren't at full strength when we came here, it was a fixture that was planned late on so we fulfilled the fixture and it was a good run out for us.

“We scored some good tries. The game wasn’t planned too far in advance but the boys train all week and the reason that they train so hard is that they want to play a game of rugby every week.

“You can see the levels of enthusiasm that the younger players show.

“I think there are a few improvements to be made though, despite the scoreline. I think when we have the ball, we have to look after it. We did that really well in the first half, tackled well and put them on the deck. We did the fundamentals well but that just went away a little bit in the second half.”

Howard Packman led the way at Iffley Road, running in five tries in the scoring fest while on the opposite wing, Josh Skelcey picked up a brace.

Tom Collins, Matti Williams, Lewis Ludlam, Tom Stephenson and Will Lovell also scored against the Dark Blues, with Will Hooley, Harry Mallinder and Sam Olver collectively slotting seven conversions.

Conditions were tough at Iffley Road as persistent rain in the run up to the game had left the pitch slippery underfoot. This didn’t seem to affect the young Wanderers side though as they played confident, fast paced rugby to run in nine tries in the first half alone.

Oxford's defence struggled to handle to pace and each time the Wanderers gained possession, they showed a clinical touch too to find their way over the line.

Despite being completely outplayed and trailing 0-55 going into half time, Oxford should be commended for regaining composure.

The hosts would pick up two tries of their own in fairly quick succession at the beginning of the second half and it was clear that the Oxford side came out fighting and were not prepared to give up.

That said, three further Wanderers tries, including Packman’s fifth, ensured the visitors edged the second half too and finished on a positive note.
