Northampton Saints will lock horns with Leinster Rugby and Bordeaux-Bégles in the pool stage of the 2020/21 Heineken Champions Cup, following today’s draw in Lausanne.
The men in Black, Green and Gold were placed into Pool A, alongside Wasps, Bordeaux-Begles, Leinster, Bath Rugby, RC Toulon, Edinburgh, Sale Sharks, La Rochelle, Scarlets, Montpellier, and Dragons.
Europe’s top-tier competition takes on a different format for next season only, with each side being assigned a ‘Tier’ ranking based on their final league position from the 2019/20 campaign.
Saints (Tier 4) will take on the two Tier 1 sides in their pool that do not play in the same domestic league – meaning home and away clashes against Leinster and Bordeaux beckon for Chris Boyd’s side in Europe.
Northampton will contest a repeat of the 2011 final against the Dublin-based Pro14 Champions, having also played Leinster twice last season, meanwhile it will be the Club’s first meeting against Bordeaux since a 1997 clash in the South of France.
Following four rounds of matches, the four highest placed teams from each pool will progress into the quarter-finals of the competition, while the next highest four teams (from 5th to 8th place in the pools) will move into the Challenge Cup round of 16.
