SAINTS 43 BATH 25 Burrell: Momentum was crucial

With 16 minutes gone Saints had found themselves 13-0 down following Kyle Eastmond's try and eight points from George Ford, and memories were fresh in the stands of the home team's last outing at Franklin's Gardens against Leinster.

But as the Saints pack bore down on the Bath try line at the end of the opening quarter Paul James was sent to the sin bin for pulling down a maul, and with the prop off the pitch the hosts scored two converted tries to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Christian Day and George Pisi both crossed while their team had the man advantage, with Jamie Elliott also scoring before the break.

Day's second early in the second half earned his team the bonus point and capped a Travis Perkins man of the match performance, and while Bath kept on coming back they were kept at arm's length by further tries from Samu Manoa and George North, along with 13 Stephen Myler points.

But it was the reaction to conceding the early try and applying pressure at the right times which proved the difference, according to Burrell.

"We showed a lot of composure," the centre said. "Leinster came here and taught us a lesson a couple of weeks ago, but today we regrouped behind the posts, they went down to 14 men and our forward pack managed to get a grip of the game and get us momentum.

"It was massively important to score while we were on top. And to get the try on the board early in the second half helped carry that momentum from the first half.

"Bath are very strong and we're not going to come up against many bigger packs than that, so credit to the forwards this week. But in the backs we had to step up as well, and across the board we were on fire today."

There is only a short turnaround until the Saints' next home game, with Harlequins the visitors to Franklin's Gardens for another top four cracker on Friday, January 3rd. Tickets are still on sale for this game, but with only a few hundred remaining book now to avoid disappointment!
