Northampton Saints Community has launched a new partnership aimed at helping transition schoolchildren into their local rugby clubs.
The star* scheme operates to break down the barriers that might prevent rugby players at schools from getting involved with a club – providing support in areas such as travel, clothing, food and memberships.
star* has operated in Bristol since 2020 and the scheme has made a big impact to young peoples’ lives who have Adverse Childhood and community Experiences (ACEs), poverty or mental health issues.
It is now expanding throughout the United Kingdom and will work with Saints’ community team through its own Project Rugby programme and its other programmes to help grow involvement in rugby in the region.
“The star* scheme is going to help us break down some of the barriers that impact school rugby players from joining their local rugby clubs,” said Saints community manager Ben Lawrence.
“Because we’re very fortunate to have so many great rugby clubs in Northamptonshire and the surrounding area for young people to join and develop their rugby journey.
“star*’s regional development officer will work with our rugby development officers to open up more opportunities for children to join local rugby clubs.”
