Saints Community launches free ‘Street Fit’ health programme across Northampton

Northampton Saints Community team will be offering free, weekly fitness sessions across Northampton as part of their brand-new 'Street Fit' programme.

Joining forces with Northamptonshire Sport, West Northamptonshire Council and Northampton Partnership Homes (NPH) to bring the programme to life, Saints Community coaches will head out into five areas of Northampton – Ecton Brook, Thorplands, Eastfields, Kings Heath and Semilong – aiming to help promote fitness and activity in communities and under-represented groups, with little or no access to sports programmes.

The new, year-long programme, which begins on 19 July as Covid restrictions lift, aims to encourage physical activity across the town – with the weekly sessions running one night a week in the five locations for the next 12 months.

Delivered by a qualified Saints Community coach, the sessions are open to both adults (aged 18+) and juniors (aged 13-17) and will be available completely free of charge to residents.

In addition to the coaching, Saints Community team will be teaming up with Northampton Saints Foundation to help build connections between the five communities and the Club, as well as the programme’s funding partners.

“Being able to spearhead a programme of this scale is a great opportunity for the Club to give back to the town,” said Jamie Higgins, Saints Community Inclusion Officer.

“The last 18 months haven’t been easy for anyone and it’s important that as we come out of the Covid restrictions, the Club helps to support the whole community of Northampton and these free fitness sessions are just a part of that.

“Reaching out to the wider Northampton community is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while now so we’re grateful to Northamptonshire Sport, West Northamptonshire Council and Northampton Partnership Homes for offering us the funding required to get this off the ground and to the Saints Foundation for their support at the sessions.

“No-one else is delivering anything on the scale of this in Northampton, so we are absolutely thrilled to be at the forefront of this community initiative!”

And Matthew Peleszok, Community Sports Development Officer at Northamptonshire Sport, echoed Higgins' sentiments.

“Northamptonshire Sport are delighted to be working alongside local partners to fund these opportunities,” he said.

“Using Sport England Tackling Inequalities funding we are able to support communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and give them the opportunity for funded activities delivered within their local area. This allows us to work alongside the residents to grow and develop physically activity on their doorstep.”

Cam Whyld, NPH’s Head of Engagement added: “Partnering with Saints provides a great opportunity for us to work together to benefit the health and wellbeing of those living in homes managed by NPH”.

The sessions are completely free of charge and available to book online now, with both junior and adult classes running for every week for 12 months from 19 July.
