Saints to deliver rugby expertise in new Tresham Academy programme

Travis PerkinsSponsored by Travis Perkins

Led by Elite Player Development Group manager Ross Stewart, Northampton Saints coaches and support staff will deliver sessions across a wide range of specialist areas, including analysis, nutrition, sports psychology, and strength and conditioning.

There will also be in-depth coaching sessions to help members of the Rugby Academy develop their game, and physiotherapy specialists on hand to keep the players at their physical peak.

Members of the Rugby Academy will also receive all the advice they need if they wish to seek a career as a professional player and will have the opportunity to compete at college level.

The new Rugby Academy will be based at Tresham College’s Kettering Campus, with members studying for a BTEC Level 2 or 3 in sport alongside their coaching and playing commitments as part of a balanced and tailored timetable.

Introductory open days will be held at the Kettering Campus on Saturday, May 17th and Saturday, June 7th for students seeking to join the Rugby Academy in the 2014/15 academic year.

Investment into the Academy of Sport has allowed Tresham College to build state-of-the-art facilities, including an artificial pitch that was used by the Saints first team ahead of their 2013 Aviva Premiership semi-final win over Saracens, and Stewart says that he is excited by the new partnership.

“Tresham has outstanding facilities and we will be able to deliver an exciting programme for young people wishing to combine playing rugby with their studies,” he said. “The course will give students the grounding and knowledge they need should they become a professional rugby player, and a qualification that will stand them in good stead regardless of their future playing career.”

The partnership between the Saints and Tresham College allows rugby to become the fifth sport in the Academy of Sport, along with boxing, golf, football and netball.

Tresham Academy of Sport gives players in these sports, who find themselves outside of the professional game, access to the professional coaching and guidance they require in order to develop their talent.
