Despite opening the scoring within the first two minutes, Saints could not claw back the eighth point deficit that Sale Sharks had built in the final quarter of the game.
Cobus Reinach opened Saints account early doors, as Andrew Kellaway and Taqele Naiyaravoro teamed up to put the scrum-half over in the game's opening minutes but a score from Denny Solomona put the hosts back in the game and Rob du Preez' conversion all that split the sides at half time.
But with Solomona doubling his tally in the second forty, coupled with a Du Preez penalty, Saints could not quite come back, even with Ollie Sleightholme's second Gallagher Premiership score in as many outings, and left the AJ Bell with just a losing bonus point.
