Following Premiership Rugby’s update on the 2019/20 season yesterday, the Club can confirm that Northampton Wanderers’ remaining matches in the Premiership Rugby Shield have been cancelled.
The side – led by Matt Ferguson, Jake Sharp and Alex O’Dowd – were sitting second in the Northern Conference standings after five matches, with a place in the knock-out stages of the competition firmly within their grasp.
However, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, and with top-level rugby in England not due to resume until ‘it is safe to do so’, the Premiership Rugby Shield competition has been cancelled for the season.
“I want to thank all the supporters who came down to Franklin’s Gardens on cold Monday evenings – it means the world to the boys.”Matt Ferguson
Despite his disappointment at not being able to press on for silverware, Ferguson is proud of what the Wandies accomplished this term.
“Obviously it’s a huge shame to not be able to finish off what we started as a group this year, but the health and safety of players, staff and supporters has to come first at this challenging time for everyone,” he said.
“I felt like we were building nicely in our really promising Wanderers group, and would have had a real shot at lifting that trophy again in a competition where we’ve had a lot of recent success.
“But we played some really nice rugby throughout our five matches and I’m proud of how the boys developed – it bodes really well for next season and I’m sure several of these guys have the potential to break into the first-team reckoning.
“I want to thank all the people who came down to Franklin’s Gardens on cold Monday evenings to give us their incredible support, and also to Club partner Toolstation who made it possible for us to broadcast the matches live on our YouTube channel and open the matches up to a wider audience.
“It means the world to the boys to know they have the support of the Town behind them.”
