It has been an impressive start to 2013/14 for the Saints, two bonus point wins at home and a successful trip to top four rivals Harlequins all coming in the first four rounds of action, not to mention a battling display that might have claimed all four points at Kingsholm.
Yet with the entire squad putting their hands up for selection, only three can be in the running for the first award of the season.
LUTHER BURRELL The big centre hasn’t just picked up where he left off last season – his level of performance has increased even further and ensured his place as an ever present in the Saints midfield. One assisting pass and a scorching break to set up another made him one of the standout backs against Exeter, while six days later came a man of the match nod for a contrasting but no less impressive performance at the Stoop. A first try of the season followed in Friday night’s win over Sale but Burrell’s contribution perhaps warranted inclusion even before his scoring antics.
CHRISTIAN DAY Stats don’t always tell the full story, but in the case of the Saints’ lineout mastermind, they emphatically do. With Day running the set piece in tandem with Dylan Hartley’s arrows, the Saints have taken in a staggering 49 of 50 throws on their own ball, Day directly responsible for 13 of those while also poaching two opposition balls – both team leading numbers. Add another Saints best of 33 tackles and it’s easy to see why so many plaudits have been coming the second row’s way.
SAM DICKINSON You can’t fail to have been impressed by Dickinson’s start to life in the Saints first team, the destructive number 8 turning in a string of outstanding performances by anyone’s standards, let alone a Premiership debutant. Two outings at Franklin’s Gardens, two man of the match performances and the numbers only further emphasise the impact he has had so far. A huge 40 carries (including a monumental 20 against Sale!) and 33 tackles are both top of the Saints charts, while only back three flyers Ben Foden and George North have made more metres with ball in hand.
