Barwell: It was a labour of love

After a fitting opening ceremony for the Barwell Stand on Saturday morning, Keith Barwell says the past 21 years and more at Franklin’s Gardens have been a pleasure.

The former chairman and his family – directors Ella and Leon in particular – have shaped the proud history and bright future of the club, but ‘KB’ - as he is affectionately known - showed typical humility.

“It wasn’t difficult to do what we did,” Barwell told SaintsTV. “It was a labour of love.

“If anyone asks me why I did what I did, it’s because I loved the supporters and I think, I hope, they liked me too.

“The Barwells are a proud family, but also a humble family. I’m sure it won’t be the Barwell Stand forever! This club is 136 years old and you don’t build that kind of history thanks to one individual or family.

“And of course, it’s the Barwell Stand because of the Barwell family and that’s mainly because Leon was 10 times better than I ever was. He would have been really happy to see everybody here today.”
