Burrell: Backs enjoying pack power

Luther Burrell says that the Saints backs don’t mind the forwards taking all the praise, so long as they keep providing the outstanding platform of recent weeks.

The three tries at Glasgow were scored by George Pisi and Ace Tuala behind the scrum and the centre is relishing the quality of ball the backline are receiving.

“The forwards were outstanding at Glasgow,” he told the official Saints podcast. “The front row in particular were exceptional again. They have been all season.

“They’re the engine room and they do all the graft, so they fully deserve the plaudits they get. They do so much hard work and that’s also credit to Westy – I’ve never seen a coach who loves his forwards so much!

“As a backline we’ve been a bit quiet this season, but I thought we had a really good balance last week, helped by the platform the forwards set. As a backs division we really appreciate what they do on a week-to-week basis.”

The challenges keep coming for the Saints and their set piece, however, and Burrell’s attentions quickly turned to the Cherry and Whites under the Friday Night Lights.

“It’s going to be a huge test for us this weekend against Gloucester,” he added. “They’re coming into some pretty good form. They’re a team with an electric backline and a very experienced pack now.

“For us, it’s about putting on a good performance back at the Gardens. We want to play that brand of rugby that gets the crowd on their feet and right behind us. We want to make this our fortress again.”
