Foden, Myler and Wood make up May Steffans Player of the Month shortlist

The Saints scooped both the Aviva Premiership and Amlin Challenge Cup over eight days and the trio nominated each played major roles not only in the showpiece fixtures, but across the month as a whole.

Just as he did in 2013, Ben Foden timed his return to scorching form to coincide with the biggest part of the season. The full back with a penchant for scoring in major finals – including the 2011 Heineken Cup and 2013 Aviva Premiership showdowns – dotted down both at Cardiff Arms Park and Twickenham, each crucial scores as the Saints came from behind to win both finals.

Another against Wasps made it three for the month and that was also a game where he made the bulk of his 375 metres with ball in hand, brilliantly laying on the Saints’ 100th try of the season. Foden also beat 16 defenders in his five appearances.

Nominee number two is the man who took the Saints to a century of tries at Franklin’s Gardens, but it is Stephen Myler’s unerring accuracy with the boot and controlling influence that sees him make the shortlist.

Man of the Match in both the Amlin Challenge Cup and Aviva Premiership finals, Myler missed just one of his 11 kicks across the two big games and also crafted tries in each.

His first try of the season contributed to a tally of 68 points for the month, Myler also passing Shane Drahm’s Saints record for a Premiership season and capping the season with an England call-up for their tour of New Zealand.

Last but by no means least is a man who lifted both trophies, Tom Wood. It was the abrasive flanker’s late try in a man of the match performance against Leicester that secured the Saints’ place in the Aviva Premiership final and almost blew the roof off Franklin’s Gardens in the process.

And Wood was in fine form once more at Twickenham, making all 14 of his tackles and carrying 15 times in a mammoth 100-minute performance. His overall stats for May aren’t too shabby either, the flanker having made 31 tackles (missing just once), carried the ball 39 times and taken in 22 lineouts.

Although the three players have been shortlisted by the club’s coaches, it is the supporters who decide who takes home the TW Steel watch that comes with the accolade of Player of the Month!

To cast a vote head to www.northamptonsaints.co.uk/steffans - everyone who votes will automatically be entered into a draw to win a £50 voucher for Steffans Northampton!
