Former Saints tackle Mount Toubkal in aid of Benevolent Fund

A group of former Northampton Saints players tackled one of North Africa’s toughest trekking challenges, as they reached the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167m) in Morocco to raise money for the Northampton Saints Benevolent Fund.

Bruce Donald (Saint #1649), Rob MacNaughton (Saint #1631), Dickie Hughes (Saint #1599) and Christian Short (Saint #1828) took on the challenge, trekking to the top and back to the bottom in under 30 hours.

The demanding expedition saw the former Saints contend with steep ascents, difficult terrain and high-altitude conditions as they pushed themselves physically and mentally in support of a cause close to their hearts.

The challenge was led by Donald, who made 14 appearances for Saints after making his debut in 1993 and now runs adventure company WildDog Events.

The quartet took on the trek to raise money for the Northampton Saints Benevolent Fund – which supports former players and members of the Saints community facing difficult circumstances. Whether through injury, illness or personal hardship, the Fund provides vital assistance when it is needed most.

Following the completion of the mission, which has raised more than £3,000 so far, the group said: “We took on the challenge of trekking to the summit of Mount Toubkal in just two days to raise money for the Northampton Saints Benevolent Fund.

“This wasn’t just a hike. Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa, and the trek pushed us physically and mentally with long days, steep ascents and high-altitude conditions. We stepped well outside our comfort zones – but we did it for a cause that really matters.

“The Northampton Saints Benevolent Fund supports past players and members of the Saints community who need help during difficult times. We’re proud to have taken on this challenge to give something back to the rugby community that has given so much to so many.
