Lawes: We want to give the crowd something to cheer

Courtney Lawes says that the Saints team are determined to give the Franklin’s Gardens faithful something to cheer this Saturday afternoon.

The Saints host Bristol in the Aviva Premiership at 3 o’clock with both teams coming into the game on the back of two wins from their last two matches.

Bristol overcame Worcester at Ashton Gate on Boxing Day before coming from behind to beat Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile the Saints kicked off the festive period by putting three tries past Sale at Franklin’s Gardens and then staging their own comeback win at Kingsholm last Sunday.

Saints trailed 9-0 at half-time, but outscored Gloucester 13-3 after the break, including scoring the only try of the game late in the second half, and Lawes says that results like that can instil confidence among the players.

“A good win is important for the team, especially at the moment,” he said. “Gloucester is always a tough place to play with the supporters on your back.

“We’ve got Bristol, Castres and Montpellier coming up, but we know that we need to win the Bristol game and to give the crowd something to cheer. We owe them for this season and we’ll be wanting to get all the guns blazing.”

Lawes re-joined the Saints squad on Wednesday after having had two days in camp with England. The lock has received plenty of positive reviews for the way he’s been playing so far this season and feels within himself that he is approaching his best form, adding: “I feel I’m playing well and getting back to the form I’ve been at previously in my career.

“I’m making some yards, offloads and tackles, and that’s the main thing. Staying fit is what makes the difference for me; hopefully I’ve realised how I can keep myself fit, and barring an accident I can look forward to getting a run of games.”
