Lions outmuscle Maori

Travis PerkinsSponsored by Travis Perkins

The British and Irish Lions got back to winning ways with a clinical 32-10 win against the Maori in wet Rotorua.

Despite conceding the only try of the opening 40 minutes, the visitors led at the break courtesy of five Leigh Halfpenny penalties. With conditions dictating the pattern of the game, the Lions consolidated their narrow lead by pegging the Maori in for the majority of the second half via a strong set-piece.

Their reward for territorial dominance was a penalty try and a close range effort from Maro Itoje, full back Halfpenny also adding a further eight points with the boot

George North started the comfortable victory, though a greasy ball and slick surface underfoot limited attacking chances not only for the Saints wing, but both teams as a whole.

The Lions now have one more warm-up fixture before the first Test with the All Blacks in seven days time, the Chiefs their hosts on Tuesday morning in Hamilton.
