Northampton Saints’ youngest ever Gallagher PREM player, Henry Lumley, is enjoying his opportunity to represent the men in Black, Green and Gold during the PREM Rugby Cup block.
Lumley, Saint #2109, made his Gallagher PREM debut in the final game of the 2024/25 season six months ago away to Gloucester, aged just 17 years and 317 days old.
With many senior players currently away on international duty, the talented centre is amongst the many talented youngsters that are enjoying increased playing opportunities while the league takes its autumnal pause – with his next opportunity being Saturday’s visit of Newcastle Red Bulls to cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens – tickets are available by clicking HERE.
“It was an unbelievable experience,” said Lumley, reflecting on his moment of history back in May at Kingsholm.
“You’ve just got to step up and take those opportunities when they’re afforded to you and enjoy it.
“Coming in for that week, it was really special. Once we arrived in Gloucester and it was a sell-out, I realised I just needed to go and enjoy myself and do what I could.
“It was something I didn’t expect. I thought I was coming in to cover training numbers, but to be told I was going to start the game was unreal.
“Coming in as a younger boy, I felt there was less pressure because people were going to expect me to make mistakes and do something wrong. So, I just went out there and enjoyed myself, trying to do what I could.”
Lumley made his second appearance in a Black, Green and Gold jersey last week in the PREM Rugby Cup in Saints’ 26-17 victory over Harlequins, alongside nine other players who have come through the Saints Academy.
“The fact that so many lads before and alongside me have come through the academy is definitely very inspiring and gives you a lot of confidence,” he said.
“Many of these boys are homegrown, which proves that the academy is a great credit to the club, having produced numerous talented athletes over the years.
“Last week was my debut at home. The crowd was so loud, I couldn’t believe it. It’s nice to have that support behind you and a feeling that you won't ever forget.
“The PREM Rugby Cup is the best opportunity for us young lads to be able to get time and minutes on the field at a high standard, so every opportunity you get, just take it, learn from it, watch it back, review it, learn and keep going.”
