Mallinder says top four in Saints' sights

Friday night saw Saints travel to Sale Sharks for the seventeenth round of this season’s Aviva Premiership campaign, despite the odds the away side came away with a bonus point win, cemented their place in the top six and put themselves back in contention for a top four finish.

Jim Mallinder said that to get the win on the road, and especially at a place a tough as the AJ Bell, was pleasing for everyone involved.

“It's a difficult place to play,” Mallinder commented after the match.

“I think to get the win up here is always pleasing.  We've not had brilliant fortune over the last few years; it's been a while since we've won here so we're really pleased.

“And of course to get the fourth try and the bonus point really puts the icing on the cake.”

When the Aviva Premierhsip returns in three weeks as Saints host local rivals Leicester Tigers at Franklin’s Gardens, Saints will sit just three points behind the fifth place side and Mallinder says that Friday’s win will give the side confidence coming into that fixture.

“Games against Leicester are always fantastic. It'll be a full house and now there's a little bit more to play for.

“They're in our sights now; it's going to be difficult but we're confident and we'll look forward to it.”

Looking ahead to when Saints have their international currently away with the Six National back, Mallinder said that while having them back will boost the side, it is the momentum that has been created in their absence that will keep the side pushing for a top four finish.

“It's difficult period; with the Autumn Internationals & the Six Nations, you're missing a lot of your key men.

“We went down to Bath and came close, then went to Newcastle, scored three tries but went on to lose that game.

“We pulled it around a little bit last week and this win has put us in a decent position.

“Clearly we'd like to be in the top four but they're in our sights. We're playing all the big teams later in the season when we've got all of our players back so if we continue to play well, you never know.”

Saints' game against Leicester Tigers in three weeks time proves to be one of the most important of the season, as well as holding the pressure of a normal Derby Day. So make your voice count, tickets available HERE.
