It is with great sadness that Northampton Saints announces the passing of Saint #1207, Richard ‘Ricky’ Winn, at the age of 96.
Winn made his debut for the men in Black, Green and Gold back in 1954, and went on to make 135 appearances over a seven-year period – in what was a golden era for the Club.
Unlike his older brother Chris, the fly-half – who also featured at centre – did not go on to achieve an England cap but played for Oxford University, including the first western post-war rugby tour of Japan in 1952.
He also represented the Barbarians five times and was a part of a Yorkshire team that reached the County Final in 1957 against Devon.
A schoolmaster in his working life at Worksop College, Winn would often make the trip to cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens with his colleague and fellow Saint, Jeff Butterfield, who would go on to make 227 appearances for the Club.
Winn retired from the East Midlands to Bristol more than 30 years ago and while he followed Saints’ fortunes, he also kept a keen eye on Bristol Bears.
Ricky died peacefully in his care home in Horfield, a short walk from the Memorial Ground in Bristol, and his funeral will take place at St Peter’s, Henleaze, the CofE church in Bristol where he worshipped for more than 30 years. The date of which is yet to be confirmed, but will be shared in an updated version of this story once available.
