Old Scouts lift inaugural Elite Insurance Club Sevens title

Old Scouts beat Colchester in a fiercely fought Cup final played on the Franklin’s Gardens main pitch before the Northampton leg of the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series, coming from behind to win 10-7.

It was a double success for Northamptonshire clubs in finals, with Towcestrians beating Saffron Walden 26-7 to win the Plate competition.

“We’ve had a good season and obviously with the Sevens coming on board as well it just gives the boys an extra opportunity to play to extend their season,” said Old Scouts coach Dale Evans. “We’ve had a cracking year playing here is fantastic.

“A lot of the boys aspire to play on the pitch. They come down here, they see their idols and they go, I want to play on there. And they’ve done it, and they’ve picked up the silverware at the end of the day as well.”

“Having the support of a company like Elite Insurance helps out with everybody and without it, great days like this do not happen. It really is a good day and the boys have enjoyed themselves.”

Elite Insurance group executive officer Barbara Bock says that she has been delighted with the first year of the Club Sevens.

“We are very pleased with all the hard work that the Saints’ community team has done,” she said. “We could not believe that we were able to extend the Sevens Series to club level in only its second year, and it is brilliant to see these young men so committed to the game already at such a young age.

“We’d love to see some of these lads go all the way through and to achieve their dreams in the Olympics. The earlier we get in and start supporting tournaments like this, the better the results will be in the future.

“Of course in the short-term playing on the main pitch at Franklin’s Gardens is a big achievement for the teams, especially before an event like the Premiership Rugby Sevens Series, with supporters in the stands and TV cameras in the stadium. It was also great to see Old Scouts and Colchester have a guard of honour from the cheerleaders!

“The Sevens Series has grown rapidly in just its first two years, and I’m confident that it will continue to go from strength-to-strength in the future, with more and more teams wanting to take part.”

The Elite Insurance Club Sevens is part of the Elite Insurance Sevens Series, which gives Under-13 school and club teams from across the East of England the chance to experience competitive action in one of the Olympics’ newest sports.

Teams first enter regional tournaments held in their respective counties, with the winners and runners-up then heading to Franklin’s Gardens to take part in Finals Day.

Teams can also receive specialist Sevens coaching from the Saints’ community team in the run-up to the regional tournaments.
