The Saints Schools Cup – launched ahead of the 2022/23 season – sees hundreds of schools come together from across the region to compete for the newest piece of silverware – and applications are now open for the 2023 tournament alongside a brand-new training programme.
Extending Northampton Saints’ offering to local schools and spreading the game of rugby further throughout the region, the Saints Schools Cup saw over 1,000 children come together last season from 250 schools across Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, and North Essex to compete across ten regional tournaments.
And the Schools Cup – that takes place throughout June this year – culminates in 20 schools meeting for Finals Day at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens to decide the inaugural nominated winners, selected for showing outstanding rugby values throughout the competition.
The programme is open to primary school children in Years 5 and 6, and will see local schools compete in a series of tag rugby festivals, showcasing the rugby skills learned in PE lessons – as part of their regular curriculum or Saints’ other popular school programme, Saints in the Schools – while also being introduced to grassroots club rugby.
And new for 2023, Saints’ Community team will be offering schools the chance to receive a six-week training course prior to the tournament – costing just £250 (+ VAT) for a package of rugby coaching and entry into the competition* as well as supporting schools’ attainment towards the five key indicators for Primary Sports Premium Funding.
