Stephenson thriving on faith

Last weekend’s win over Wasps was the 20-year-old’s 10th start in 2014/15 and with Luther Burrell back in England’s midfield for the Six Nations, Stephenson is keen to make his mark.

“It’s great that the coaches have that confidence in me,” he told the Saints Podcast. “It’s nice they feel they can put me in while Luther is away and hopefully still get the results we want. It’s good to have that backing and hopefully I won’t let them down.

“I do feel a bit more pressure but I enjoy being under the spotlight.”

Friday evening sees the return of the Aviva Premiership when London Irish head for Franklin’s Gardens. The Six Nations period was a good one for the Saints last season, but Stephenson says that the side aren’t getting ahead of themselves this time around.

“I don’t think we lost a [Premiership] game during this period last year and that was a great boost of confidence, especially for players like myself who are trying to make a point.

“But we still have to put the pressure on ourselves. We can’t afford to relax and expect things to be the same. We still have to go out there and make sure we perform to get the results.”

You can hear the full interview, as well as previews with Jim Mallinder, Salesi Ma’afu and Mike Haywood, on the official Saints Podcast, downloadable HERE or streamable across all devices. England centre Burrell also previews the visit of Italy to Twickenham on Saturday.

Tickets for Friday’s game with Irish meanwhile are running out fast, with less than 200 remaining. Be part of a 12th Gardens sell-out of the season and buy online HERE.
