Tony Hewitt to step down as Non-Executive Director at Saints

Tony Hewitt has notified the Board of his intention to step down as a Non-Executive Director of Northampton Saints following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season.

Having first become involved with the Club though his friendship with Keith Barwell in 1988, Hewitt joined the Saints Board as Non-Executive Director in 1996 (a short time after the game turned professional), stepping up to be Deputy Chairman in 2011 and then serving as the Club’s Chairman between 2013 and 2017.

Under Hewitt’s Chairmanship, Saints won the Premiership and European Rugby Challenge Cup titles in 2014 and finished top of the Premiership table for the first time in 2015.

Hewitt played a leading role in the transformation of the Club. He was responsible for the land negotiations which saw Edgar Mobbs Way constructed and the Club acquire the freehold of its training pitches and access to 1,500 car parking spaces – meaning it remains one of the few Premiership Rugby clubs to have both playing and training facilities on one site.

Alongside Leon Barwell, Hewitt was also a central figure in the initial share offer for Northampton Saints plc in 2000, and spearheaded the development of all four stands at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens – including the Barwell Stand development in 2016.

“After more than 27 years as a member of the Board, I will be stepping down at the end of the season,” said Hewitt.

“Saints has been a huge part of my life, and it has been an immense privilege to serve the Club I love. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together over the last three decades.”

“From a playing perspective, it was tremendous to be a part of the Club when we won the Heineken Cup in 2000, and then to have the unprecedented run of cup finals and trophies between 2008 and 2014, having also experienced the lows of relegation in 2007 in-between.

“Together with the Barwell family, I’m also very proud to have been involved in transforming cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens into a multi-use stadium that is the envy of other clubs in the Premiership.

“I wish John White, the Board and the executive team every success in implementing the Club’s five-year plan and will look forward to remaining close to the Club as a shareholder and supporter.”

Commenting on the decision, Northampton Saints’ Chairman, John White, said: “On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Tony for his significant contribution to Saints over the course of the last 27 years.

“Tony’s influence at Saints is clear for all to see – whether it’s development of Franklin’s Gardens or the cups which reside in the Club’s trophy cabinet.

“We are very lucky to have had him involved with the Club during this period and I know we will always be able to call on his unique knowledge.”
