KO

Sam Olver starts this Aviva 'A' League semi-final...

WAND 0 QUINS 0

2mins

Speculative chip and chase from Diggin but as Quins spill, the Wanderers go through the phases and Olver opens the scoring when Harrison is not released in the tackle.

WAND 3 QUINS 0

6mins

Another raft of phases put together by the Wanderers but this time as van Velze looks to bash his way through there’s a knock on and the game gets its first scrum.

WAND 3 QUINS 0

7mins

Botica misses touch with a penalty and boy is he made to pay. Williams charges forward with a brutal carry and with men out wide, Stephenson makes the final break before feeding Packman on the left. Clinical from the Wanderers.

WAND 8 QUINS 0

10mins

Good little restart from Quins though and with Williams going for a ball that isn’t out, Botica kicks a penalty to get the visitors on the board.

WAND 8 QUINS 3

17mins

Another good spell of attack from the Wanderers and their patience is bringing reward. Quins go offside in midfield and Olver lands simple three pointer.

WAND 11 QUINS 3

21mins

Direct stuff from the Wandies and Quins are struggling to contain the big runners. This time Olver goes for a drop but pulls it just wide. At the other end a fine break and smart kick from Botica goes unrewarded as the ball first bounces kindly for the Wanderers before Packman guides his man into touch.

WAND 11 QUINS 3

27mins

Quins respond in kind with a lengthy barrage on the home line and while the Wanderers hold out, Botica kicks his second penalty of the evening from an advantage.

WAND 11 QUINS 6

29mins

Quins try and an interception score for Smith. Skelcey shows great pace to reel his opposite number in but the Harlequin has the momentum to slide forward, find his feet and ground. Botica misses with the extras so we’re back as we started.

WAND 11 QUINS 11

33mins

Dubious offside call against Skelcey chasing Olver’s brilliant cross kick and from the lineout Quins maul close to the line before putting Smith into the corner for his second. Botica again goes astray with the conversion.

WAND 11 QUINS 16

38mins

Scrum time in midfield and the Wanderers get the nod after it crumbles. Olver confidently clips over the resulting penalty to reduce arrears.

WAND 14 QUINS 16

HT

Just two points in it at the break and the Wanderers can count themselves unlucky to be behind. Howard Packman has scored the home try with Olver kicking the other nine points. Smith, with an interception and another after a questionable penalty call has a double for Quins.

WAND 14 QUINS 16

40mins

Botica gets the second 40 underway, Quins having replaced Merrick with Treadwell. Harrison and Stephenson both make good ground for the Wanderers on early breaks but the latter is dragged into touch.

WAND 14 QUINS 16

46mins

Heck of a touch finder from Olver having seen Day make some 30m with a quick tap penalty. The lineout is scrappy but controlled well and when Ethan breaks he wrestles his way over, taking three Quins defenders with him. Another important contribution from Williams in that score, too. Olver’s extras hit the upright.

WAND 19 QUINS 16

54mins

Another brilliant overhead kick in behind from Day has Quins retreating and Dickson’s chase forces Lindsay-Hague into touch. From the lineout the Wanderers get their maul on again and Woolford is the man driving the unstoppable freight train to score a third try. Olver makes it a seven-pointer.

WAND 26 QUINS 16

63mins

The Wanderers have stepped it up a notch in this second half, the forwards in particular getting through a monumental amount of work. On the attack again Packman is upended horribly by Trayfoot but it’s just a penalty. Not that the Wanderers mind as they produce quick ball from the lineout and van Velze smashes his way into the corner for the score that could kill this game off. The hosts are now three scores clear.

WAND 31 QUINS 16

66mins

During a break in play five Wanderers go down for a bit of a stretch and Diggin can't resist a bit of banter in front of the Tetley's, walking his hamstrings out to a chorus of cheers!

WAND 31 QUINS 16

71mins

Huge scrum from the Wanderers and after more muscular carrying from Harrison, Olver takes his time and coolly drops over another three points.

WAND 34 QUINS 16

74mins

Harlequins won’t give up their title without a fight though and despite the Wanderers getting on the front foot at the scrum, Chisholm rescues the ball from the back and dives over. Grimoldby converts.

WAND 34 QUINS 23

76mins

…and they’re right back in it now, Marchant finishing a scintillating breakaway and Grimoldby slotting a brilliant conversion. That’s two of the three scores they needed can the Wanderers hold tight for another two minutes?

WAND 34 QUINS 30

78mins

That’ll help the cause, the Wanderers winning a defensive penalty on Quins’ 10m line and able to take some seconds off the clock eying up the posts. It hits the left stick though from range, great effort from the young 10!

WAND 34 QUINS 30

80mins

It’s definitely over now! The Wanderers go scavenging again and off turnover ball Verbakel fends off numerous defenders and sends the outstanding Williams into the left corner. Game over!

WAND 39 QUINS 30

FT

The Wanderers are into the Aviva ‘A’ League final! Tries from Packman, Ethan, Woolford, van Velze and finally Williams negating a late surge from the holders at the Gardens. The remaining 14 points were kicked by the assured Olver fr a 39-30 scoreline.

It’ll be a home tie, too, Bath coming to town on Monday, December 16th.
