Joining Northampton Saints in the summer of 2020, Tom James first arrived at Franklin's Gardens from Championship outfit Doncaster Knights.
The switch saw the scrum-half make the step up to the Gallagher Premiership for the first time in his career, having enjoyed spells with the Knights and Bedford Blues in the Championship, as well as Loughborough Students in National One.
His exploits for the university side saw him called up for England Students back in 2016, and at Castle Park James established himself as Doncaster’s first-choice scrum-half – finishing the 2018/19 season as Knights’ top-scorer and adding eight tries in 18 appearances to his tally in 2019/20, before the season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
James debuted in Black, Green and Gold in against London Irish after the restart of rugby in 2020 and scored his first try in a Saints shirt during his Heineken Champions Cup debut against Leinster in Dublin.
He provided cover for Alex Mitchell during the 2021/22 season, which he finished strongly with his two tries at Saracens helping Saints earn two bonus points that played a vital part in them qualifying them for the Gallagher Premiership semi-finals.
